STEWARDSHIP DIVISION
“The Stewardship Division is unique because they recognize landowners as a part of
the conservation equation and the people as part of the ecosystems they strive to
preserve”

Because the majority of grassland species have been declining and over 80% of the
shortgrass prairie ecosystem was (and still is) under private ownership it was (and
is) crucial to have private landowners’ interest and cooperation.
Through outreach efforts including workshops, presentations, landowner visits, bird
inventories, and the distribution of educational materials RMBO’s Stewardship Division
(originally Prairie Partners) has built a voluntary coalition of Great Plains landowners
and resource professionals committed to bird habitat conservation.
In addition the program helps private landowners find funding for and implementing
on-the-ground habitat enhancement projects to benefit the conservation of at-risk
wildlife species throughout the Great Plains.
RMBO’s presence within the Intermountain West and Great Plains from Montana and
Nebraska to Texas has increased the need for our growing outreach program. The continued
presence of the Stewardship Division in local communities strengthens the relationship
between private landowners and state, federal and private conservation entities.
