In 1998, RMBO, in conjunction with its funding partners, the Colorado Division of Wildlife, the U.S. Forest Service, and the Bureau of Land Management, implemented the first year of Monitoring Colorado’s Birds (MCB). MCB will provide statistically rigorous long-term trend data for populations of most diurnal, regularly breeding landbird species in Colorado, including several species listed by government and non-government conservation organizations as species of concern. The program is structured so that we obtain count-based data for all breeding landbird species in the state on a randomized and habitat-stratified basis. Since 1999, we have implemented the protocol in a total of 13 habitats and are successfully monitoring 40% of regularly breeding landbird species in Colorado. (photo by Jeff Birek)
