Range Land Management Specialist, Gillette, WY
Job Description: The Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory in partnership with the Wyoming – Natural Resources Conservation Services (WY-NRCS), the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the Northern Great Plains Joint Venture (NGPJV) seek a qualified Range Management Specialist to assist with habitat restoration efforts on private lands in the Powder River Basin (PRB) of Wyoming.
The PRB falls within the BLM High Plains District and is a critical area for land management planning for sage grouse habitat. A recent population viability analysis released by the BLM and the University of Montana emphasizes the importance of accelerating reclamation after energy development. The challenge is that while nearly 70% of the PRB is federal minerals, only 10% of the surface is managed by the BLM. For this reason, the NRCS plays a critical role in the reclamation and restoration of sage grouse habitats within the PRB on privately owned lands.
Job Duties:
- Provide range ecology, technical assistance and guidance to landowners, government agencies, non-government organizations (NGO’s) and others.
- Coordinate the implementation and application of biological sciences within the Farm Bill conservation programs in cooperation with the local NRCS District Conservationist, BLM Powder River Basin Restoration staff, Conservation District staff and others.
- Complete contracts, applications and other required documentation for Farm Bill conservation programs (i.e. EQIP, WHIP, FRPP, GRP, CRP and WRP) requiring biological and rangeland science expertise in cooperation with the partners.
- Communicate program requirements, complete site visits to determine eligibility, and develop contracts/plans for applicants enrolling in USDA conservation programs or other state and local conservation programs for the protection, restoration and enhancement of sage grouse habitat.
- Coordinate and participate in field work activities for sage grouse habitat project implementation and work with agricultural producers.
- Provide quarterly updates to partners on progress and accomplishments.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with landowners and partner agencies.
- Ability to work independently with little supervision and with diverse clientele.
- Knowledge of range science and wildlife ecology including the ability to develop prescribed grazing plans that include wildlife habitat management objectives.
- Able to obtain USDA Security Clearance and NRCS Conservation Planning certification.
- Excellent verbal/written communication and organizational skills.
- Valid driver’s license.
- A general qualification guideline for this position is a Bachelor of Science Degree in Rangeland Science from an accredited university with an emphasis on developing prescribed grazing systems and course work and/or experience on integrating wildlife management principles into the management systems.
Training and Experience Guideline: Minimum BS in Range Ecology or Management in addition to a preferred 2-3 years relevant experience.
Salary: $46,000 per year + Health and Retirement Benefits.
