RMBO has been leading efforts to integrate bird conservation efforts within the
state of Colorado. Our efforts are largely devoted to transferring information,
bringing potential partners together, and working with a whole suite of diverse
players to move together in the direction of all-bird conservation. To further
assist in providing information to and integrating conservation efforts among
conservation partners, we developed a printed "Guide
to North American Bird Conservation - the four major bird plans and NABCI,"
which explains the goals, regional boundaries, and strategies of these major
bird plans/initiatives in Colorado.
Bird Conservation Plans at the continental level have been developed separately
for different taxonomic groups, in the form of the
North American Waterfowl Management Plan,
Partners in Flight, United States
Shorebird Conservation Plan, and
North American Waterbird Conservation Plan. For more information about
these conservation efforts, please see the "Guide to North American Bird
Conservation - the four major bird plans and NABCI."
While conservation planning and the setting of biological objectives takes place
separately for waterfowl, landbirds, shorebirds, and waterbirds, implementation
of the conservation activities planned by each Plan may best be accomplished in
an integrated fashion. This coordination among initiatives is articulated in
the North American Bird
Conservation Initiative, which is dedicated to facilitating
communication and conservation among plans. RMBO works to relate the goals and
objectives of various plans at the national and regional levels to conservation
projects in the Rocky Mountain and Great Plains region.
RMBO also assisted the CDOW in hosting an All-bird Conservation Workshop, one of
several funded throughout the United States by the International Association of
Fish and Wildlife Agencies. The workshop, "Charting a Course for Integrated
Bird Conservation in Colorado," took place in Pueblo, Colorado in February
2002, and included over 70 bird conservation partners from government and
non-governmental organizations associated with bird conservation in the state.
Ideas regarding implementing bird conservation measures in Colorado were
discussed, as were ways to better integrate efforts among conservation entities
and programs oriented to different species groups.
